Ukraine national team have played their second UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier

The team of Andriy Shevchenko went away to Luxembourg. The starting line-up featured the Shakhtar players Andriy Pyatov, Bohdan Butko, Mykola Matviienko, and Junior Moraes. Sergii Kryvtsov, Taras Stepanenko, and Serhii Bolbat remained on the bench, and Marlos left the national team camp after getting injured in the encounter with Portugal.

Goal exchange

As early as in the 2nd minute, Moraes fired the first shot on the host goal only to see it go wide. The Yellow-and-Blues had the initiative, but could not really threaten the goal of Moris, except for a set-piece by Konoplyanka. In the 33rd minute, Luxembourg attempted their first attacking move, doing it very well though, as only Pyatov’s double save rescued the Ukrainians after the attempts by Malget and Chanot. However, in the next situation, Andriy was also powerless, when Turpel planted it into the back of the net from a point-blank range. However, the visitors pulled one back just shortly after that: Tsyhankov took advantage of Zinchenko's clinical pass to make it 1-1.

Dramatic denouement

The second half began with a dangerous shot by Vincent Thill (somewhat inaccurate) and continued with a number of attacks by the Ukrainian team. In the 68th minute, Moraes played one-two with Tsyhankov and sent the ball towards the far corner - off the post. In turn, the Luxembourg players not only selflessly defended, but also made dangerous runs into the opposition half. In the end, a defender blocked Moraes’s attempt, with Olivier Thill hitting the outside of the net. And in stoppage time, there was a dramatic denouement: Rodrigues netted an own goal after Malynovskyi’s set-piece delivery.

2-1 - a hard-fought victory of Ukraine in Luxembourg. The team of Andriy Shevchenko claimed 4 points in two starting games to top the qualifying group B.
