On November 14, the national team of Ukraine had a friendly match vs Estonia in Zaporizhia
Andriy Shevchenko’s men are preparing for their final UEFA Euro 2020 qualifier against Serbia, which will not affect their future as the Yellow-and-Blues have advanced to the competition finals from the top spot early. And in the meeting with Estonians, Ukraine’s head coach has given match practice to many footballers who previously remained mainly in reserve. Nevertheless, Mykola Matviienko operated at centre-back. Also, the Miners Serhii Bolbat and Viktor Kovalenko appeared from the off.
Workload, debut, and late goal
The Ukrainians had a significant advantage. As early as in the 4th minute, Bolbat could have got an assist under his belt but for the keeper who rescued the visiting side after Besedin’s shot. Midway through the first half, Kovalenko produced a great free-kick only to see the ball whizz over the crossbar. A bit later, Matviienko forced Igonen to work after making a long-range attempt, with Sobol having a couple of scoring chances, though the teams still left for the break with 0-0 on the scoreboard.
Matviienko and Kovalenko each spent 45 minutes on the pitch, while Bolbat remained in the lineup for the second half. The Shakhtar Academy graduate and current Zorya Luhansk player Dmytro Ivanisenya made his debut for Ukraine in this game. The hosts created a few more great chances, however, the Estonian goalkeeper’s performance has been just clinical this evening. During the stoppage time, it seemed that the match would end in a goalless draw, but a free-kick by Roman Bezus turned out to be decisive after bouncing off a player in the wall lineup and into the back of the net, making it 1-0.
On November 17 in Belgrade, Ukraine will meet with Serbia. The game kicks off at 16:00, it will be aired live on the Futbol 1 TV channel.
