In round 11, Shakhtar hosted the Premier League newcomers Kolos
Luis Castro's team are the UPL leaders having 30 points and a enjoying a double-figure edge over the closest pursuers. After international games, the Miners’ coach rotated the squad, fielding the young Valerii Bondar, Marquinhos Cipriano, and Dodo in defence from the off, with Viktor Kovalenko replacing Taras Stepanenko in midfield and Yevhen Konoplyanka playing as a left winger, and with Tete replacing Marlos.
Early goal and first-half thrashing
Five minutes were enough for the hosts to carry out a few dangerous attacks and to open the scoring: Taison intercepted the ball near the opposing box, the ball bounced off to Junior Moraes who confidently converted his chance, making it 1-0. The Kovalivka team responded with their chances: Pyatov saved an attempt by Volkov, with Smyrnov heading it wide. And right then, Konoplyanka played one-two with Taison down the left wing and planted the ball into the far top corner from the edge of the box, making it 2-0. In the 32nd minute, Dodo surprised everyone. The right defender unexpectedly raced up the left flank, beat Ryabov twice and easily lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper – 3-0. Late in the first half, Taison gave the by-then big score an even more lopsided look. The captain finished off the team’s continuous attack with his long-range shot from about 15 metres away from goal. Just a few minutes later, he crowned a counterattack with scoring a brace. It was 5-0 before the break.
Moraes’ double and Boryachuk’s return
Early in the second half, Valerii Bondar could have scored one – to differ from the first half when his dangerous header whizzed just inches off the post, his second attempt was saved by Yashkov. Kolos did not park the bus either: Bondar denied Smyrnov’s attempt, and Volkov shattered the crossbar of the Miners’ goal. And still, only Shakhtar players scored goals this evening. In the 61st minute, Taison linked up Junior Moraes to the attack, the latter burst into the penalty area, shifted the ball from the right to his left foot and sent the ball right into the corner, making it 6-0. Ten minutes later, the league’s most prolific player was replaced by Andriy Boryachuk after his rejoining the team. The young striker immediately created danger - he went one on one and fed Marcos Antonio only to see the latter’s attempt being blocked. Before that, Konoplyanka (the ball went high) and Kovalenko with Moraes (double save by the keeper) could have put their names on the scoresheet. In the dying stages, Marlos made a dangerous free-kick attempt, with Matviienko trying to flick it home - both attempts were parried away by the keeper.
6-0 - Shakhtar thrashed Kolos, finishing the first league stage with perfect record of 11 wins and 33 points.
