On February 9, the Miners completed the Turkish training camps with a test game vs Ventspils
In the meeting vs the bronze medalists of the Latvian League, Luis Castro checked different combinations of football players in action, having made a total of 10 substitutions in the second half.
Bondarenko, Marcos, and Vakula
Shakhtar controlled the course of the game most of the time, dominating possession, changing the attacking flanks, honing their player moves and putting some tactical developments into practice. The starting-XI substitute Artem Bondarenko managed to open the score in the 8th minute after he raced to the penalty area to hit the left corner just to see the Latvians being rescued by the post. A bit later, he earned a spot-kick which was immaculately finished off by Marcos Antonio, making it 1-0. Here we emphasize We also want to mention that only the Brazilian centre-half spent all 90 minutes on the pitch this morning. On a few occasions, the Miners ripped open the opponents’ defence, in particular Marcos and Vakula did so, with Vladyslav having a chance and with the ball going slightly higher from than the corner of the goalkeeping area. And in another episode, after Marcos’ delivery, Bondarenko jumped out from behind the defenders and inaccurately headed it - just wide.
Game practice
After the break, Luis Castro made several substitutions not in line with the players’. Kryvtsov came on for Bolbat and took a place in the centre-back, with Bondar shifting to the right. There, he played about 20 minutes and successfully gave way to Vitao. Marlos replaced Vakula, with Tete moving to the left attacking wing. Finally, Fernando came on for the final 20 minutes, no longer as a genuine forward though, as Moraes and Sikan worked as attacking spearheads. The U21 midfielders Dmytro Kryskiv and Klym Prykhodko, whose appearance allowed Shakhtar to refresh the play and provide Stepanenko and Bondarenko with some rest, did help the first team. In the 73rd minute, Fernando disturbed Makhnovskyi with a powerful precision effort, with no more real danger occurring near the goal of Ventspils. But Trubin averted the threat on a couple occasions after making long-range shots and preventing Kozlov from evening the score in the end.
Shakhtar have had 8 training games in Belek - they are coming back to Ukraine today to continue their preparation for the resumption of the season.
In Kharkiv on February 20, the Miners will receive Benfica in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 32.
