Shakhtar captain Andriy Pyatov speaks about the coronavirus, the league resumption and training at home
- Andriy, what have you been doing while in quarantine?
- I’ve stayed at home with my family. I also exercise to keep fit - the coaches email training programmes to us. I train using fitness bands, TRX loops; I ride a bike. The eldest daughter and my wife are my company for that.
- What do you make of the coronavirus pandemic?
- The situation which just few people could believe. But when the virus had reached Ukraine, we felt that it’s really serious. I keep in touch with Ruslan Malynovskyi, with the national team coaches staying in Italy, right in the thick of it. I understand that everything’s very complicated actually.
- How do your family members protect themselves?
- Sterility, cleanliness, minimum contacts with people. I think that self-quarantine will work. We can get over the epidemic this way.
- What will be the effect of suspending the Championship and the European competitions for Ukrainian and European football?
- It’s hard to judge, because there’s no exact competition resumption date. Of course, this will affect the entire football community. I want to play the remaining league games and get back to the previous mode very much.
- You have four children at home. How do you cope with them?
- We are used to that! We approach that cheerfully. I entertain the kids and my wife to the best of my ability. We’ve long dreamed of the whole family spending some time together, so we are delighted with this opportunity. Quarantine also has a positive side.
- What would you like to tell the fans in this tough time?
- We all have some worries, but sooner or later it will be over. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones, make sure you don’t get sick. And surely, see you at a football match!
