We continue the column on the performance of Shakhtar players in the 2019/20 season

Next in line are some interesting figures and facts about the central defender Mykola Matviienko.

Last season, the football player made 27 appearances for Shakhtar, also having made 28 apps this year. Under Luis Castro, Mykola participated in all European cup matches (9). In the Championship, the team won 16 of 17 games with Matviienko present on the pitch (excluding the 1st round in Oleksandriia and the late substitution appearance).

Matviienko and Kryvtsov are the main central defenders of Shakhtar in the 2019/20 season. The coaching staff rely on them on most occasions, moreover, Mykola and Serhii actually played for an equal number of minutes. In March, in the return match of the two-legged tie vs Wolfsburg, Matviienko, after replacing Ismaily, moved to the left-back. At the same position, he played for 90 minutes in the next game - vs Zorya in the Championship.


Based on his total number of passes, Matviienko is the second best in the team after Ismaily – 1,853 with the passing accuracy of 92%. He passed the ball to the final third 248 times, with 86% of them reaching the teammates. In terms of the number of received passes, Mykola also ranks second (1,415). On average, out of every ten defensive challenges Matviienko wins 7. Also, he is the best for the number of clearances (89).
