Shakhtar played Vorskla away in the Premier League MD12 game
The teams approached the major game in adjacent positions in the table, being divided by only two points. Roberto De Zerbi carried out an expected rotation: Valerii Bondar appeared at centre-back from the off, Taras Stepanenko and Alan Patrick operated in midfield, Marlos had the right winger role, and Fernando played on the left wing.
Numerical advantage
From the opening minutes, the hosts accepted the open football offered by the Miners and even created their first dangerous chances in the match: after a corner kick, Tamm sent the ball inches off the post, and Trubin coped with Perduta's tight-angle effort. One of the key episodes of the game happened in the 29th minute: Poltava’s booked midfielder Thill roughly played against the orange-and-black keeper and was sent off. Having gained a numerical advantage, Shakhtar players immediately created several scoring opportunities: Fernando first missed the target from close range while trying to finish off Pedrinho's delivery to the far post. Later he missed the target from outside the penalty area, narrowly missing the low corner of the net.
Effective substitutions
After the break, Roberto De Zerbi tweaked a few players in the lineup by fielding Danyil Sikan, Tete and Manor Solomon in the attacking third. As it turned out, these substitutions were crucial as all three players gave some edge to the play and orchestrated the first goal. In the 65th minute, Sikan, surrounded by a few rivals, sent a precision pass to Solomon, the Israeli crossed it into the penalty area, Reznik palmed it away to Tete who drilled the back of the net from a five-metre range, making it 0-1. The second half was held amid a tense atmosphere, with the teams arguing a lot with each other and with the referees, and the intensity subsiding only after the second goal by the Donetsk side. In the 78th minute, Manor Solomon played one-two with Marlos and hit the roof of the net from the edge of the box. At the end of the match, long-range attempts by Sudakov and Konoplia threatened the home side’s goal, never reaching it though.
2-0 – Shakhtar beat Vorskla in this challenging match. On October 27, the Miners will face Chornomorets Odesa away in the Ukrainian Cup Round of 16 (the game kicks off at 19:30). And on October 30, Roberto De Zerbi's men will host Desna Chernihiv at the NSC Olimpiyskiy.
