On the UEFA Nations League MD4, the national team of Ukraine hosted their Irish counterparts

The teams already met a week ago in Dublin, with the Ukrainians celebrating a narrow win back then (1-0). This time, the Blue-Yellows were nominally holding the home game in the Polish city of Lodz due to the war unleashed in the territory of our country by Russia. The national team’s head coach Oleksandr Petrakov made several changes in the squad, but at the same time the Shakhtar defender Mykola Matviienko appeared from the off again.

We conceded the opener

Early stages of the match turned out to be calm at both ends, with the first dangerous chance created by Ruslan Malynovskyi and the goalkeeper hardly making a save. Mykolenko had another good chance, but Kelleher also coped with his effort. Midway through the first half, the Ukrainians had a forced substitution: the injured Malynovskyi gave way to the Miner Mykhailo Mudryk. And on 31 minutes, the visitors opened the scoring in one of few attacks of theirs: Collins found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and beat Riznyk. Even before the break, the Blue-and-Yellows created a couple of pretty good chances: first, Mudryk burst into the penalty area and fed Karavaev, but the latter shot inaccurately before Zinchenko’s diving effort that went off the target.

Logical outcome

The Ukraine national team managed to bounce back immediately after the break: in the 47th minute, Artem Dovbyk finished off Yarmolenko’s cross and equalized to make it 1-1. Midway through the second half, the teams exchanged dangerous attacks. Parrot's shot was blocked by defenders, and Knight's long-ranger was stopped by Riznyk. In response, Mudryk launched an attack, which Mykolenko crossed it into the goal area, with the teammates having no time to finish it off though. In general, the Ukrainians had more possession of the ball, so the opponents were looking for their opportunities in counterattacks, but no one else managed to score another one that evening. 1-1 – the national teams of Ukraine and Ireland tied.

The Ukrainians are topping the group with 7 points after 3 games. They are followed by Scotland (6 points), Ireland (4) and Armenia (3). Oleksandr Petrakov's men will play the next UEFA Nations League game in September.
