With Oleh Oshenkov Shakhtar achieved their first significant success in local tournaments, winning the USSR Cup twice in a row.

A native of St. Petersburg, he came to Donetsk in June 1960 and immediately went to work. Oshenkov conducted a considerable staff turnover and modified the scheme of the game. And in his second season, the Orange-and-Blacks saw their first success. The Pitmen reached the final of the USSR Cup, where they met with the Soviet champions Torpedo Moscow and their recent European champions. Despite the strength of the opponents, Shakhtar achieved a brilliant win and brought their first trophy to Donetsk.

In the next two years, his squad also reached the final. In 1962, the trophy was back in the capital of Donbass, but the third time the team were stopped by Spartak Moscow. In over a decade of Oleh Oshenkov’s work, Shakhtar became a team with a strong pitman’s character. During his time, a whole galaxy of outstanding players appeared, including Volodymyr Salkov, Yurii Ananchenko, Mykola Holovko, Vitalii Saveliev, Valentyn Sapronov, Anatolii Rodin.

On May 12, 2013 a star of Oleh Oshenkov, immortalizing his name in the history of Shakhtar appeared on the Walk of Fame.
