In the Champions League round 3, Shakhtar played Feyenoord away

The Miners arrived in Rotterdam with three points after two matches and were considered the favourites of this clash. Paulo Fonseca fielded the strongest players at this moment, recalling to the starting XI Fred and Bernard, who started the last Ukrainian league game on the bench.

Exchange of goals

From the opening minutes, the hosts, driven by the powerful support of the capacity crowd, began to put pressure on Shakhtar defence and created two moments of danger yet in the opening stages to open the scoring in the 8th minute: Pyatov smothered an effort from Vilhena, before Bergheis was successful in the rebound. It took a while for Paulo Fonseca’s team to separate themselves from the stands pressure and take the proceedings under their control. As soon as the Donetsk side managed this, they immediately levelled the scoreline on the board. Fred split the entire Rotterdam side’s defence with a beautiful pass and sent Bernard one-on-one, as the latter converted it in a wonderful fashion by beating Jones and slotting the ball into the empty net to equalise 1-1. Shakhtar became even more confident, with Fred taking the role of the main creator of attacking moves throughout the first half and sharpening the game through his passes. The Ukrainian champions managed to make their mark once more, but Ferreyra’s strike was ruled out for offside. Facundo missed a good opportunity a couple of minutes before the break: the Argentine fired from a promising position from the heart of the area only to send it off the target.

Unrestrainable Bernard

The rivals made a much more careful start to the second half, with the Orange-and-Blacks, however, coming in front already on 54 minutes. A rapid move, with half of the team involved, ended with Butko’s delicate cross from the right flank, which Bernard headed home at the far post to make it 1-2. Ferreyra immediately scored another one but was flagged offside again. Shakhtar comfortably kept the Dutch at arm's length from Pyatov's goal and did not forget about forays forward to the other end. However, fifteen minutes from time, the visitors went down to 10 men: Yaroslav Rakits’kyy picked up a second yellow card and left the pitch. Fonseca immediately reacted to this by replacing the only forward by David Khocholava at centre back. The Donetsk side did not sit back at the defence and tried to meet the opponents in the midfield, when possible, responding with sharp counterattacks. However, Andriy Pyatov was forced to enter the fray and make a save: the goalkeeper securely denied the unexpected blow from Toornstra. In compensated time, the Rotterdam outfit earned two dangerous set pieces, but the Miners survived.

2-1 - Shakhtar defeat Feyenoord away and secure the second spot in Group F. On November 1, the teams will meet in Kharkiv.

The Orange-and-Blacks will hold their next match on October 22. In the Ukrainian Premier League fixture, Paulo Fonseca’s men are to lock horns with Dynamo Kyiv away.
