The Miners will receive Arsenal-Kyiv in the U21 league round two
July 28, Schaslyve, Kniazha Arena, 14:00
Before the match
Shakhtar U21 started the season with an away win over another league newcomer Desna (2-1). In that duel, more than half of the squad were young players who have made their debut in the U21 league. They have yet to adapt to the new conditions, but so far the result has been secured by the more experienced Oleksandr Hlagola, who scored two goals and topped the scorers race. Probably, the rest of the leaders will join the team soon: Dmytro Topalov and Volodymyr Yakymets are gradually rediscovering their form, Oleksii Kaschuk is recovering, the internationals are expected to return to Shakhtar’s camp by the end of the week.
Interestingly, the upcoming meeting can be called a kind of derby: both academies are based in Schaslyve near Kyiv, and both of them play home games at the local arena.
Opponents
Arsenal-Kyiv are taking part in the U21 league for the first time after the club’s revival in 2014. At the same time, the capital-based team should have no squad-formation problems because over the past two seasons, the young Gunners have played in the U19 championship, with the reserve team being coached by Yurii Len’, who knows the team very well. In the starting game, the Kyivites entertained Lviv and finished the game 0-0.
Head-to-head record
The previous meeting between the U21 teams of Shakhtar and Arsenal Kyiv was held on October 4, 2013 in Donetsk: back then, everything ended in a 5-0 thrashing by the hosts. As the more recent examples, we could recall the two encounters between the U19 teams last season: 4-1 win for the Miners and a 1-1 draw.
