Opponents
The history of Austria dates back to 1911. The club is the second best in the country after Rapid for the number of titles: 24 league wins (the last success happened in 2013) and 27 domestic Cups. For five years now, the undivided hegemony of FC Red Bull Salzburg has reigned in Austria. Meanwhile, the Violet-Whites were the runners-up in the 2016/17 season, when Olarenwaju Kayode was the league’s top scorer with 17 goals, completing the last season just in the 7th spot. The 49-year-old German Thomas Letsch coaches the Violets.
Olarenwaju Kayode played for Austria from 2015 through 2017 and netted 37 goals in 85 apps.
European competitions
Shakhtar have met three times with the Austrian clubs in European competitions. The first opponents in 2002 were Austria Vienna. In 2007, the Orange-and-Blacks made it past Salzburg in the UCL qualifying stage, also defeating the Vienna-based Rapid in 2015. By the way, Marlos netted two goals in the recent two games.

On June 26, 2011, Shakhtar and Austria had a friendly match in the framework of the Salzburger Land Cup. In the first half, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Luiz Adriano got themselves on the scoresheet, with Marco Stankovic and Darijo Srna scoring goals after the break to make it 3-1. From the current Shakhtar squad, Alan Patrick and Dentinho took part in that game, both appearing in the 60th minute.
