On July 5, Paulo Fonseca’s men are facing the first friendly match in Austria
In the southern town of Villach, the Miners will take on the Vienna-based Austria. We bring you the friendly preview.
The history of Austria dates back to 1911. The club is the second best in the country after Rapid for the number of titles: 24 league wins (the last success happened in 2013) and 27 domestic Cups. For five years now, the undivided hegemony of FC Red Bull Salzburg has reigned in Austria. Meanwhile, the Violet-Whites were the runners-up in the 2016/17 season, when Olarenwaju Kayode was the league’s top scorer with 17 goals, completing the last season just in the 7th spot. The 49-year-old German Thomas Letsch coaches the Violets.
Olarenwaju Kayode played for Austria from 2015 through 2017 and netted 37 goals in 85 apps.
Shakhtar have met three times with the Austrian clubs in European competitions. The first opponents in 2002 were Austria Vienna. In 2007, the Orange-and-Blacks made it past Salzburg in the UCL qualifying stage, also defeating the Vienna-based Rapid in 2015. By the way, Marlos netted two goals in the recent two games.
