Shakhtar continue their marathon with three tournaments, and the new head coach of the Miners Marino Pusic has already managed to claim the first victories in each of them: in the Ukrainian Cup, the team defeated Viktoriia (3-0), in the previous round of the UPL, major opponents Dynamo Kyiv lost to them (1-0), and on Tuesday it was time for triumph in the European arena – Shakhtar defeated Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League match (1-0).
Shakhtar approach the match against Dnipro team in 4th spot in the standings with 24 points (goal difference: 21–10), but having 2 more games in hand compared to the opponents, potentially making the Orange-and-Blacks the hidden leaders of the league. As for personnel issues, the Miners have no suspended players, and there was even addition to the coaching staff – Belgian fitness specialist Roel Tambeur joined the team the day before.
Dnipro-1 are having a powerful autumn part of the championship: after a difficult start of the season and a change of coach, the players have rediscovered their form, winning 7 of their last 8 matches, and are currently in 3rd spot in the standings with 27 points. Traditionally for teams of Yurii Maksymov, his players do not show very effective football, but they act reliably in defence: the Blue-and-Whites scored 16 goals and conceded only 10 in 13 rounds of the league.
Dnipro team won the previous home match in this minimalistic style, defeating Oleksandriia (1-0). The only goal was scored by forward Oleksandr Filippov, who has only 4 goals and 2 assists in the previous 6 matches, he is the team’s top goalscorer together with Oleksii Hutsuliak.
Shakhtar and Dnipro-1 played 7 matches in the UPL: the Orange-and-Blacks won 6 times, Dnipro team were stronger in 1 match. Total goal difference: 15–4 in favour of the Miners.
On May 28, 2023, the teams also played at Arena Lviv in the penultimate round of the league. In the 9th minute, Artem Bondarenko opened the scoring with a shot from outside the penalty area, and at the beginning of the second half, goals by Danylo Sikan and Taras Stepanenko secured a crushing victory – 3-0. Then this result was crucial in the fight for gold: Shakhtar defeated their direct competitors and won their 14th Ukrainian League title.
