Match build-up
Shakhtar continue their European club cup journey. The Miners have already started in the Europa League after the autumn the Champions League group round: Igor Jovicevic's men defeated French Rennes in February after a two-match confrontation, winning penalty shootout. The Pitmen resumed their performances in the Ukrainian League last week, defeating Minaj (4-1) and Metalist 1925 (7-0) and returning to the top of the UPL table.
The Orange-and-Blacks were preparing for the match against the Rotterdam side in Lviv. The team arrived in Warsaw using the usual route through Rzeszow 2 days before the match.
Opponents
Feyenoord, who advanced to the UEFA Conference League final last year (losing to Roma 0-1), started this European season from the group stage of the Europa League. The Rotterdam team played in a quartet with Italian Lazio (2-4, 1-0), Austrian Sturm (6-0, 0-1), and Danish Midtjylland (2-2, 2-2). As a result, all 4 teams scored 8 points, but according to additional indicators, the Dutch won the group competition and advanced directly to the last-16 of the tournament. Feyenoord are having a strong season in the domestic arena too. Arne Slot's men recently qualified for the Dutch Cup semi-finals, where they are to play Ajax and lead the Eredivisie with 55 points after 24 rounds (goal difference: 54-22). The fact that they have never lost in 2023 demonstrates an excellent form of the Rotterdam team: 9 wins (5 victories in the last matches) and 4 draws.
The team leaders of this season are 21-year-old Mexican defender Jose Jimenez (12 goals, 2 assists), Brazilian forward Danilo Pereira (11 goals, 4 assists), and the captain, Turkish central midfielder Orkun Kokcu (10 goals, 2 assists). Injuries of main goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, midfielder Quinten Timber and Swedish striker Patrik Volemark should be noted among the losses of the Dutch team.
Match background
Shakhtar and Feyenoord played 2 matches in the 2017/18 Champions League group stage. The Miners won for the first time in Rotterdam owing to Bernard’s goal (2-1) and then claimed a key victory in Kharkiv when Facundo Ferreyra and Marlos scored twice (3-1). This allowed the Orange and Blacks to get over the competitor and enter the play-offs.
