Preview

Shakhtar’s first opponents at the winter training camp in Belek are HNK Hajduk Split.

History

The club was founded 108 years ago, in February 1911. The team have a total of 18 championship trophies, including six titles in recent history, after Croatia’s withdrawal from Yugoslavia in 1991. The Whites celebrated their most recent triumph in the 2004/05 season, followed by a period of undivided hegemony of Dinamo Zagreb.

Bronze medallists

Last season, Hajduk finished third after Dinamo and Rijeka, being seven points adrift of the champions and securing the Europa League qualifying round berth. There, the Miners’ opponents defeated Slavia Sofia of Bulgaria, being knocked out by the Romanian Steaua in the next round. Split also reached the Croatian Cup final, losing 0-1 to the same Dinamo Zagreb.

Coach and players

Hajduk’s manager is the 46-year-old Sinisa Orescanin, who previously worked with the U17 and U21 sides. He took charge of the first team on November 27, 2018, replacing Zoran Vulic. Sinisa held just four competitive games (2 wins and 2 defeats).

Orescanin manages the international squad with some promising young Croats and more experienced foreigners. The important players are the right-back Josip Juranovic, Mijo Caktas after his spell at Rubin, the winger Adam Gyurcso, and the forwards Jairo da Silva and Mirko Ivanovski.
