Match build-up
Meeting of the teams in Warsaw ended with the victory of the Miners – 2-1. Igor Jovicevic’s men secured a comfortable handicap in the first half: in the 11th minute, Dmytro Kryskiv opened the score, and a few moments before the break, Artem Bondarenko doubled the advantage, converting a penalty kick earned by Konoplia. At the beginning of the second half, the French pulled one goal back by Toko-Ekambi’s efforts, however they didn’t manage to score more.
Shakhtar’s staff potential has not changes over the past week – everyone who participated in the first leg is in good health and preparing for the game at the Roazhon Park. Igor Jovicevic brought 28 players to Rennes in total. In the absence of any meetings in the UPL, the Orange-and-Blacks managed to conduct several training sessions in Warsaw and arrived in France on Tuesday.
Opponents
Rennes played another match in the French Ligue 1 between two meetings with Shakhtar – Bruno Genesio’s side claimed a victory over Clermont (2-1) at home last Sunday. 21-year-old forward Arnaud Kalimuendo, who made a double, became the man of the match, scoring a goal in each time. It should be noted that the Les Rouge et Noir’s coach gave some players a rest: Gouiri, Truffert, Ugochukwu and Doue came off the substitutes’ bench only in the last 15 minutes of the game.
Match background
This will be the third meeting between Shakhtar and Rennes in the European competitions. Two previous ones ended with a minimal victory of the Pitmen. The Miners won at the Roazhon Park in the 2006/06 UEFA Cup group stage owing to Elano’s goal (1-0), as well as the second clash a week ago in Warsaw (2-1).
Rennes vs Shakhtar match will be officiated by the judging panel headed by Tobias Stieler.
