Before the match

Before the meeting with the Metalist reserve team, the Pitmen were topping the table being two points ahead of Dynamo. The Kharkiv side reached the seventh position in the table owing to seven consecutive victories. Many changes were made in the starting lineup of Shakhtar. In particular, Bogdan Sarnavskyi took the place between the sticks, with Ihor Kiryukhantsev and Dmytro Steflyuk coming out in defence and on the flanks, with Andriy Korobenko staying as a sub on the bench and Artem Gabelok missing the squad list for the game.

First half

The game started disappointingly for Shakhtar, as early as on 5 minutes, the visitors managed to open the scoring: following a right-hand cross, Demidov sent the ball into the back of the net to make it 0-1. The Pitmen could not set their performance for a long while, while the Kharkiv side had another great chance on 20 minutes, when Sarnavskyi parried away a Koshman attempt towards the near top corner. The coaching staff of Shakhtar decided a reshuffle the players in the holding area in the course of the first half, with Korobenko taking to the pitch. Almost immediately afterwards, the Pitmen missed an excellent chance to equalise:Oleksandr Zubkov brought Andriy Boryachuk one on one with the keeper, with the striker bursting into the penalty area and making it past the goalie just to see his attempt go wide of the post. Shakhtar’s being active made Metalist defend collectively, but before the half-time whistle it already got too dangerous near the goal of Sarnavskyi, who pulled the ball from under the crossbar after a Krayev free-kick.

Second half

After the break the pace of the game increased, it was the end-to-end action with both teams actively attacking. The Pitmen again failed to take advantage of a one-on-one situation, when Serhiy Gorbunov failed to beat the Kharkiv goalkeeper. Boryarchuk fired a powerful shot just under the crossbar only to see the goalkeeper come to the rescue. From that moment on, Shakhtar seized the initiative, with the pressure on the opposition defensive third paying off: the substitution player Denys Arendaruk, who took to the pitch, passed it along the goal line to Gorbunov to flick it home from close range – 1-1. In the course of the game, the Pitmen had two more chances. The same Gorbunov was most active on the pitch. In the end of the meeting, fielded all the available players, still failing to score a winner.

Now the situation in the U21 League standings has got really tough, with Shakhtar and Dynamo going neck and neck with 48 points each. Dnipro have four points less. The Pitmen will play their next match away on April 9 against Dniprodzerzhynsk-based Stal, who have advanced to the fourth spot after Matchday 20.
Miguel Cardoso, head coach of Shakhtar U21 team:

- The game gets increasingly more difficult if it starts with conceding a goal as early as on five minutes. And we have ourselves complicated our task. We knew that Metalist are a team with character, self-confident, playing with will to win. We had to balance our performance, and we tried hard, although it did not always turn out well. In the first half, we failed to capitalise on at least three scoring chances. It was important to score, and the game would have immediately changed. The goal did not come for a long while, which gave energy to the opponents. We equalised at the time when, in fact, we paid it through our fatigue. Before the match, we had to make adjustments taking into account the players being involved in different national teams, but everyone returned in a better form, with two important players of our team missing out - Habelok got a cold and Adamenko got injured. However, we can complain only about ourselves, as during the game we failed to capitalise on five or six chances, going one-on-one three times. Football does not forgive such prodigality. Sometimes, small details very seriously affect the result. But now we need to think about the next meeting, as we mustn’t lose any points.
