The Pitmen are approaching the Europa League quarter-finals in a good mood. In the domestic league, the charges of Mircea Lucescu confidently beat Metalist, continuing to fight for the top spot. However, at this stage, the Orange-Blacks have completely switched to a different competition – the players’ every thought is about the upcoming match against Braga.

Mircea Lucescu took 21 players to Portugal. Shevchuk and Azevedo will not play vs Braga, with Kucher and Fred being suspended.

Opponents

One of the main themes in the media regarding Braga is their 1-5 defeat at the hands of Benfica in the Portugal league. For the team, it was the biggest defeat in five years. However, such failures are known to give players additional motivation for the next matches. The quarter-final meetings with Shakhtar is a different story for Braga.

Let us remind you that in the Europa League Round of 32, the charges of Paulo Fonseca knocked Sion, Switzerland out of the competition, making it past Fenerbahce, Turkey in the Last 16 two-legged tie.

Match background

Shakhtar and Braga met in the 2010/11 Champions League group stage. Mircea Lucescu's team claimed two wins. Goal difference is 5-0.

It is also interesting that Shakhtar played in Braga back in 1978. A friendly match against Sporting Braga then ended 1-0 for the Pitmen (with Yuriy Reznik putting his name on the scoresheet in the second half).

Shakhtar played that match having the following line-up: Degterev (Vyacheslav Chanov), Yaremchenko (Varnavskiy), Gorbunov, Kondratov, Pyanykh, Sokolovskiy (Fedorenko), Latysh, Reznik, Starukhin (Rogovskiy), Rudakov (Mishin), Safonov.
For 78 minutes, the scoreboard displayed the goalless stalemate, but an accurate long-range shot by Rat tipped the scales in favour of Shakhtar, with Luiz Adriano extending the lead to 2-0
Previous meeting

On December 8, 2010, the teams played in the Donbass Arena in the 6th round of the Champions League group stage. For 78 minutes, the scoreboard displayed the goalless stalemate, but an accurate long-range shot by Rat tipped the scales in favour of Shakhtar, with Luiz Adriano extending the lead to 2-0.

Interesting fact

Braga have not lost a single home game in the UEFA Europa League 2015/16.
