Before the match

The return game against Braga has become historic for Shakhtar: Darijo Srna made his 486 competitive game appearance for the Orange-Blacks, being a new record of the Donetsk club! The previous achievement have lasted since 1987, belonging to Mikhail Sokolovskiy, who was specially invited to this game as a guest of honour. In comparison with the first meeting, in which the Pitmen claimed a 2-1 win, there have been three changes in the starting line-up of the Portuguese side. The recently suspended Oleksandr Kucher returned to the pitch, with Ivan Ordets coming on instead of Yaroslav Rakits’kyy, who got excessive cards.

First half

The opponents started it without intelligence, with the game going  end to end, with challenges being extremely tough on every bit of the pitch. The ball did not stay in the middle of the pitch, with dangerous situations occurring near both sides’ goals, without reaching any scoring chances. On 24 minutes, the Pitmen carried out a dangerous attacking move: Marlosbrought Viktor Kovalenko through on target, with the latter beating the goalkeeper and being brought down. The penalty kick was masterfully converted by the captain Srna, who fired it into the right bottom corner – 1-0. Immediately afterwards, the Donetsk side played a dangerous free kick on the right, they could have doubled the score in the following attack, butFacundo Ferreyra who found himself one-on-one with the keeper, hit the woodwork after trying to lob the ball over the keeper. The visitors tried to seize the initiative, but the Pitmen, after waited for a short while, responded with a second goal. In the course of a massive attack, Ismaily crossed it along the goalline, with Kovalenko being unable to get on the end of that pass, although Srna got the ball near the right-hand side corner flag, sending the ball back into the goalmouth, where Braga defender Ricardo Ferreira shot it against themselves- 2-0.

Second half

In the opening minutes of the second half, the score got big. After the Pitmen’s excellent attacking move, Srna found himself in the penalty area and sent it somewhat back to Kovalenko, whose shot flew past the Braga goalkeeper – 3-0! Soon afterwards, Maksym Malyshev was close to scoring in a similar situation. Donetsk played with courage, not allowing the visitors to recover, who, however, also created a couple of dangerous chances after 60 minutes. Meanwhile, Shakhtar continued boosting it up, with the fourth ball finding the back of the net vs Braga, although the goal was ruled out due to its being offside. However, on 74 minutes, everything happened in line with the rules: Marlos and Taison produced a brilliant move, with the visiting defender Ricardo Ferreira finding the back of the own net again, with Facundo Ferreyra being about to fire the ball into the back of the net – 4- 0. The Portuguese side were completely demoralised, although before the final whistle, Braga might have scored, but Donetsk goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov operated reliably.
