Before the match

Shakhtar are approaching the game being the U21 championship leaders. The charges of Valeriy Kryventsov claimed two wins at the league start: they demolished Zirka 6-0 and beat Chornomorets 2-1 away.

Oleksandriya started the season with a narrow defeat against Dynamo (0-1), conceding the only goal from the penalty spot; in the second round they drew with Vorskla at home (1-1). Vladyslav Shkinder scored for the hosts. At the moment, the Tricolour side sit in the tenth spot in the table.

In the meeting against Poltava, they sent off the Oleksandriya striker Volodymyr Mykolayiv, who now will not be able to help his team in the game against Shakhtar.

Oleksandriya took part in the reserve sides’ premiership just two times in their history, in the seasons 2011/12 and 2015/16. The charges of Andriy Kuptsov finished the past league season in the 12th place. At the same time, Oleksandriya proved themselves as a home team: claiming six wins out of eight on the home pitch. Leonid Khomichev, who scored all of their five goals from the penalty spot.

In the summer, Oleksandriya U21 retained the backbone, being reinforced with some young club representatives. Also, the first team players appear in the U21 team on a regular basis.

As part of the U21 league, the opponents met four times. In the 2011/12 season, Shakhtar claimed a home win (3-1), and the away game ended in a draw (2-2).

Trivia

Head coach of Oleksandriya U21 Andriy Kuptsov played for Shakhtar Donetsk from 1988 through 1994. He made 45 appearances for the first team, becoming the runner-up in the 1994 Ukrainian League season.

The referee Ivan Bondar officiated the meeting between the first teams of Shakhtar and Oleksandriya last season. The meeting ended in a win for the Pitmen (2-0).
