Before the match
Paulo Fonseca in his 10th match as the head coach of Shakhtar fielded the same line-up in the return leg against the Turkish club as the one in the away game in Istanbul.
First half
The match began at slow pace. Since the first minutes the Orange-and-Blacks captured the territorial advantage, playing the ball and trying to conduct positional attacks. First threats at the Istanbul Basaksehir's goal took place in the 13th minute, when the Ismaily easily took care of his opponent and made an attempt to the near corner. The guest team's goalkeeper deflected the ball to a corner. Soon the Pitmen have succeeded, but the referee marked a foul by Facundo Ferreyra, who headed the ball into the net after a tackle with a defender. And on 22 minutes, Shakhtar scored am opener. Ismaily made a powerful cross, and Attamah ricocheted the ball into his own net. In the time remaining before the break the ball mostly stayed in the midfield. Though the Turks began acting more aggressively, they did not manage to trouble Andriy Pyatov - the Pitmen easily negated all the opponents' efforts.
On 52 minutes Marlos showed individual play, beating two opponents in the penalty box, but the Brazilian's pass was intercepted by the goalkeeper. Soon Taison checked Babakan's reflexes from a distance, but again with no luck. Once again Marlos had a real chance but his curve ball was parried by the goalkeeper. Fred made a similar attempt, but the numbers on the scoreboard remained the same. Nevertheless, the Orange-and-Blacks managed to score the second goal. Marlos was awarded a penalty which he successfully realized. After that Paulo Fonseca made a series of substitutions, releasing fresh Maksym Malyshev, Eduardo and Wellington Nem. In the last 20 minutes the Pitmen could have scored twice, but Facundo Ferreyra did not convert a great pass from Yaroslav Rakitskyy that send him one-on-one with the keeper, and on 88 minutes Darijo Srna, being in a great striking position, hit the crossbar from close up.
On August 28, Paulo Fonseca's squad will play an away game against Stal Kamianka in the Ukrainian Premier League. The kick-off is at 7:30 pm.
