The Donbass Arena held a gala opening on August 29, 2009. Today, Shakhtar's home stadium marks 7 years
The Pitmen debuted at the new arena on September 27, 2009 and as of today held 102 matches there in which they have 80 wins (14 games ended in a draw, and the opponents prevailed in 8). Goal difference: 238-50.
The Donbass Arena is the pride of Donetsk and the whole region. This elite class stadium can accommodate over 53,000 spectators. The record attendance at the Arena took place on September 2, 2012 in the Shakhtar vs Dynamo game (53,423 fans). The total attendance of the Donbass Arena constitutes more than 5.6 million people.
One of the important events in the history of the stadium was the European championship 2012. The Donbass Arena hosted three group matches, quarter-final and semi-final of had been recognized as the best arena of the tournament by UEFA. Also, according to the results of the continental, the Pitmen's home stadium was won the Safety & Security Award at The Stadium Business Awards 2013 ceremony for the exemplary work under the force majeure conditions in the Ukraine vs France match.
In August 2014, in accordance with the decision of the FC Shakhtar president Rinat Akhmetov the Humanitarian 'Help' HQ was created at the stadium, whose work aims to help victims of armed conflict in the Donbass. The Donbass Arena has become the centre of logistics of unloading and distributing groceries to the inhabitants of the region. The Arena itself has come to be called the Charity Arena. During the work of the HQ a total of 9.4 million food packages have been distributed at the Arena.
