Champions League: before the draw

Shakhtar’s opponents in the league route might be one of the four teams below. Let us remind you that UEFA draw the representatives of Ukraine and Russia into different groups, therefore Shakhtar will not play Rostov. Let us make a short introduction to the potential opponents.

Steaua (Bucharest, Romania). The record holders in terms of the number of domestic league titles (26). The 2015/16 Romanian League runners-up. Shakhtar and Steaua had a friendly match in Antalya in October 2013 (Shakhtar won 4-1). The sides have never met in competitive games.

PAOK (Thessaloniki, Greece). Two-time champions of the country. The 2015/16 Greece League runners-up. In October 2005, Shakhtar claimed a narrow win at PAOK in the UEFA Cup group stage game (1-0). Another friendly game in Thessaloniki  in October 2007 ended in a draw (0-0).

Monaco (Monaco, France). Seven-time domestic champions. The 2015/16 French League third place. In 1979, the Pitmen encountered them twice in the UEFA Cup. Also, in July 2015, Shakhtar beat Monaco 3-0 in the LOTTO Lubelskie Cup in Poland.

Young Boys (Bern, Switzerland). 11-time domestic champions. The 2015/16 Swiss League runners-up. Shakhtar played 7 friendly games against Young Boys: 4 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses (goal difference: 17-12). The sides have never met in competitive games.
