Before the match
Shakhtar and Chornomorets started the season with opposite results. The Pitmen marked the debut of their new head coach Valeriy Kryventsov by thrashing Zirka (6-0). The Sailors in the first round fought with Poltava-based Vorskla, but still suffered a narrow defeat (1-2). The only goal was scored by Dmytro Mykhailychenko.

The Odessans significantly renewed the team squad in the summer, bringing in more players born in 1998 and 1999. The coach remained the same. The renowned representative of Odesa football school Henadiy Nizhegorodov works with Chornomorets U21 and U19 teams.
