Before the match

Shakhtar and Chornomorets started the season with opposite results. The Pitmen marked the debut of their new head coach Valeriy Kryventsov by thrashing Zirka (6-0). The Sailors in the first round fought with Poltava-based Vorskla, but still suffered a narrow defeat (1-2). The only goal was scored by Dmytro Mykhailychenko.
