Shakhtar head coach Paulo Fonseca made five changes in the line-up compared to the recent meeting. Instead of Ivan Ordets and Sergii Kryvtsov at centre-back, Yaroslav Rakits’kyy and Olexandr Kucher took the field against Chornomorets. The attacking third was represented by Yevhen Seleznov and Dentinho this time, who replaced Taisonand Eduardo. Finally, Viktor Kovalenko replaced Taras Stepanenko in the holding area. We also want to note that the Pitmen have put on the new 2016/17 season away kit for the game vs the Sailors.
From the opening minutes, the Orange-and-Blacks seized the territorial advantage and carried out a number of promising attacks in the early stages. Marlos, for whom the duel against Chornomorets has been the 100th Premier League appearance, hit the post from a scoring range. A few minutes later, one of the rare attacks by the Odessans was stopped by Yaroslav Rakits’kyy, who found himself in the right place after a header by David Khocholava. The Pitmen responded to that with a blistering attacking move: Bernard fed Seleznov after making it past several defenders only to see the latter’s attempt denied by the opposing goalkeeper. By the way, the Shakhtar striker more than once threatened the goal of Yevhen Borovyk, but the most dangerous moment in the first half with his participation happened in the 34th minute. Darijo Srnaput Dentinho through, the latter crossed it along the goal line with Ievgen Seleznov failing to beat the defender and finish it off. In the remaining time before the break, Shakhtar played upfield, with the whole Chornomorets team defending.
From the off, an unpleasant episode awaited the Orange-and-Blacks: Bernard fell awkwardly onto his arm and had to be replaced, with Eduardo coming on instead. On 51 minutes, the Pitmen opened the scoring when Darijo Srna delivered a corner, Yaroslav Rakits’kyy shot on target and Ievgen Seleznov tipped it in. It took a little more time to see Fred double the lead with a real stunner. However, almost immediately, the Sailors reduced the deficit through a powerful edge-of-the-box smasher by Oleksiy Khoblenko. Later on, the charges of Paulo Fonseca continued to dominate it and managed to fulfil their advantage only in the end of the match. Darijo Srna took the corner, with Eduardo winning an aerial challenge and bundling it into the back of the net. In injury time, Viktor Kovalenko got himself on the scoresheet by firing it home past the keeper.
