Shakhtar fitness coach gave an interview to shakhtar.com

- Tell us about your duties on Paulo Fonseca’s coaching staff.
- You can say that I am a fitness coach. As you know, we pay great attention to tactics, focusing on that. So I do physical and tactical training with the players, also working on the training process methods.

- Previously, Italian fitness experts worked at Shakhtar for many years, while you represent Portugal. How different is your approach to coaching?
- To be honest, it’s hard to compare. I only know our training principles and what we ultimately consider to be ideal. The whole process is important: how we will be able to convey to the players the way they should fulfil all the requirements. On our coaching staff, no one performs just certain duties. All are interchangeable - we have a complete system. One training, whether tactical or physical, may involve four coaches. The main thing is not running a lot, but running well.
Our training sessions should always be the reflection of the game. That is, the real match will be just like our training. The intensity of training is determined by the game and the opponents
- Theb players had very intense opening training sessions. Why do you immediately give them such a big workload?
- In fact, they were not like that. It is important that the guys initially understand our idea and vision of the game. I think this is what the club management wanted when they were signing a contract with us. We will try to meet all their expectations. We will work in a slightly different format, but, perhaps, it will be better. Nobody plays quickly if they train slowly. Our training sessions should always be the reflection of the game. That is, the real match will be just like our training. The intensity of training is determined by the game and the opponents. The players should understand that if they are well prepared for the next games, they will face no issues later. Therefore, we need to convey the idea to the team, for everyone to understand it and start interacting. Moreover, the maximum individual concentration and focus on tactics in the zones are important.

- Pedro, previously you worked for all your life in Portugal. How did you react to Shakhtar’s proposal and to the relocation to another country?
- We all have enthusiasm, we want to grow and win. Our track record already features victories. What could be better than joining such a big European club as Shakhtar and challenge titles?

- What would you like to achieve with the Pitmen?
- As I‘ve said, we want, first of all, to convey our ideas to the team, as well as build a good relationship with the players. I believe that if all this happens, then together we will be able to achieve great heights.
