The Donetsk team players shared their opinions about the away game against the Belgians
Andriy Pyatov, Shakhtar goalkeeper:
- Most importantly, we have claimed a win. Yes, we conceded one in the opening minute, but the guys were not broken mentally and eventually reversed the game. Then we scored four goals and probably got somewhat complacent. When we conceded the second, the team reacted again, but in the closing stages we still didn’t quite figure it out. Perhaps it’s good that all that happened in one match. We will analyse it in detail, figure out our errors and, hopefully, will no longer repeat them. Most importantly, we showed character and have achieved the goal.
We won four games and claimed the top spot in the group two rounds in advance. It was evident that the hosts really wanted to score an early goal, which they succeeded at. But then we got everything under control, equalised and soon took the lead
Taras Stepanenko, Shakhtar midfielder:
- We can’t halp rejoicing: we won four games and claimed the top spot in the group two rounds in advance. Before the match our coaches told us that Gent had never lost in front of their fans. But it's difficult to say whether the Belgians had encountered a team of Shakhtar level. It was evident that the hosts really wanted to play well and score an early goal, which they succeeded at. And for about twenty opening minutes, we really had a hard time. But then we got everything under control, equalised and soon took the lead. Of course, it’s unpleasant to concede in the opening seconds, but, as for me, it is better to give one away straight away than towards the end of the match. Well, it was important for the Belgians to score, and possibly win with a certain score, since the 0-5 defeat clearly hurt their self-esteem. But, as they say, they charged forward and got captured. Nevertheless, the audience must like the game, with Gent being on the ball in front of their fans and scoring thrice against us.
