In the closing game of the 2017 UEFA European U21 Championship qualifying round, Ukraine U21 met with the group leaders Iceland

The Blue-and-Yellows’ mentor Oleksandr Holovko fielded two Pitmen in the starting line-up: Taras Kacharaba and Mykola Matviienko. In the first half, the hosts had an overwhelming advantage, converting it in a goal on 22 minutes. However, the most interesting events took place after the break.

In the second half, two more representatives of Shakhtar appeared: Oleksandr Zubkov and Andrii Boriachuk. They proved to be the main performers. On 56 minutes, the Ukrainians equalised when Boriachuk showcased his immaculate finishing skills following a set piece. Shortly afterwards, Zubkov played successfully – on 76 minutes, Besedin converted his assist. Although in the very end the Icelanders managed to level it, the Donetsk team scored again. On 90 minutes, Andrii Boriachuk got on the end of Maksym Tretiakov’s cross, with Oleksandr Zubkov getting himself on the scoresheet in injury time, assisted by the man of the match Boriachuk.

4-2 win for Ukraine. Despite the success in the recent rounds, Ukraine U21 finished the qualifying stage in the fourth spot.
