The visitors got the ball under control from the opening minutes, trying to safely play in defence and fulfil the positional attacks. Although the scoring chances were not numerous, midway through the first half, Ukraine national team opened the scoring. On 24 minutes, Andriy Yarmolenko converted a penalty for a foul on Artem Kravets. It was not long until the Blue-and-Yellows again disappointed the goalkeeper of Turkey. Taras Stepanenko found Yarmolenko up field with a great pass, Yarmolenko sent a one-touch pass to Kravets, and Artem left Volkan Babacan with no chance. Despite the tangible advantage of the Ukrainians, the hosts pulled one back in the stoppage time. The Turks managed to equalise just a few minutes before the end of the match, when the referee pointed to the 11-metre mark, with Hakan Çalhanoğlu converting the spot kick. As part of the EURO 2017 qualifying stage, Ukraine U21 met with Northern Ireland. As part of the EURO 2017 qualifying stage, Ukraine U21 met with Northern Ireland in Kyiv. Both teams lost the chance of competing for the European Championship berth, therefore the game at the Obolon Arena had no competitive value.

The starting line-up of the Blue-and-Yellows featured all five representatives of Shakhtar, who had been called up by Oleksandr Holovko to the U21 national team: the defenders Mykola MatvienkoTaras Kacharaba and Ihor Kiryukhantsev, as well as the midfielder Oleksandr Zubkov and Andrii Boriachuk. All the Pitmen played for 90 minutes, except for Kiryukhantsev, who was replaced six minutes away from time.

The major events developed in the first half. Already in the 12th minute, the visitors opened the scoring, with the Ukrainians responding immediately: Besedin scord a goal following Zubkov’s free kick delivery. Later, Nothern Ireland focused on defending, with the score remaining unchanged despite all the efforts by the hosts. At the start of the second half, the visitors created several dangerous chances, but they failed to score. However, the players of Ukraine U21 team, taking over the initiative midway through the second half, just rarely bothered the opposing keeper. As a result, a natural 1-1 stalemate.
