Before the match
The Pitmen rounded off the playing stage of their pre-season’s preparation with a test match against Rio Ave, occupying the ninth spot in the Portuguese top flight. This winter, Paulo Fonseca’s team have played total of 8 friendly matches, having claimed 6 wins and recorded 2 draws. Compared to the previous game, Shakhtar starting XI saw some changes. Ivan Ordets played centre-back to team up with Yaroslav Rakits’kyy, with Vasyl Kobin taking right-winger’s position from the opening minutes and Bernard in the role of left midfielder.

First half
The Pitmen brought the game under control on the instant and could have broken the deadlock in the open stages: after playing a corner, Gustavo Blanco Leschuk lashed a shot from a few meters to see defenders prevent the ball from rolling over the line and deny his teammates' further attempts to tip in. Midway through the first half, the Portuguese managed to level the game and fashioned a couple of moments of danger near Andriy Pyatov’s goal; however, it was the Donetsk side, which opened the scoring. Just immediately after that, Pedro Moreira could pull level going one on one with Pyatov, but dragged his drive wide of the mark. In the reverse attacking move, Cássio denied Blanco Leschuk’s net-buster with difficulty by palming the wet-with-rain ball away for a corner.

Second half
At the interval, Paulo Fonseca changed the line-up completely to allow all players spending equal time on the pitch. It took only eight minutes for the Pitmen to double the lead. Rio Ave immediately made another try to respond, however, Mykyta Shevchenko cleared away the danger by winning a challenge with Cassamá. The team displayed a high-pace performance in the second half, practically all the time keeping the ball not too long in the midfield. The home side delivered attacking moves down the wings whipping high and low crosses into the area only to see Shakhtar defence and goalie clear them out without effort. On their turn, the Orange-and-Blacks tried to move the ball, play one-touch passes and hit the opponents on the counters. It was the similar breakaway, with 9 minutes remaining, that led to claiming the third against the Portuguese. Oleksandr Zubkov set up Taison into a breakthrough who led away a defender along with the stopper to play a pass onto the path of Boriachuk onrushing alongside, with Andrii hitting a neat effort into the corner to lock the final score at 3-0.
After completing the training camp with a comfortable 3-0 win over Rio Ave, Shakhtar kick off one-week preparation program for the Europa League round of 16 opening match versus Celta to be held on February 16 in Spain.
