This weekend, fixtures of the Ukrainian youth championship resume. On 25 February, Shakhtar U21 will lock horns with Poltava-based Vorskla in Schaslyve

Shakhtar U21 head coach Valeriy Kryventsov told shakhtar.com of preparation for the opening match of season’s spring part, the results of the winter training camp and staff changes.

- We are fully satisfied with the way our pre-season training passed: we succeeded in everything planned. The lads treated the activities seriously and responsibly, working with great determination. First, we gathered at the training facility of Schaslyve to get used to the training conditions, before holding a crucial and valuable training camp in Turkey from 23 January to 17 February. We had two sessions a day: in the morning, we worked out in the gym and performed exercises on the sand working on explosive power, strength, starting speed, while evening training session were mostly of tactical nature, including very heavy loads.

- Did you contrive to alternate training sessions with friendlies?
- Yes, in Turkey we played out ten friendly games, with seven of them against adult teams. It was important to see how our players were able to make quick decisions when pressed for time and under the tight pressure of experienced opponents. We are raising players for the first team, so the guys must be ready for the high intensity of the adult football in future in order to vie for a place in the starting XI. We involved all players in those matches for everybody to get a roughly equal amount of time on the field. On top of that, a scientific group joined us at the camp, so we had entire information on each player’s loads, distance in kilometres and activities.

- Do you have some staff changes to the team?
- The changes are minor, but there are some. Artur Avahimian left on loan for IIichivets, with us saying goodbye to Mykyta Bezuhlyi , Yurii Senytskyi and Ilya Ichuaidze. The Ukraine U21 team players Valeriy Bondar, Dmytro Topalov and Viktor Korniienko, who played in the fall for Shakhtar U19, joined our side. In the course of the season, we are going to get the young players, who prove themselves in the U19 team, involved in the U21 league matches. Currently, we have 16 field players and two goalkeepers.

- In what kind of mood are the team approaching the clash vs Vorskla?
- Everybody is in good competitive spirit, longing to play. Throughout the last week before the season restarts, we train in Schaslyve and look forward to resuming of the championship, so that we could implement our best practices in games. It is safe to say that we are 100 percent ready for competitive fixtures.
