Before the match

For the first match in the Atlantic Cup, Shakhtar head coach Paulo Fonseca included in the starting line-up Marcio Azevedo, who missed the first part of the season due to injury, and Viacheslav Tankovskyi, who played quite well in recent friendlies. Former Shakhtar midfielder Tomas Hubschman led Jablonec onto the pitch as their captain.

First half

The early stages of the meeting saw the Pitmen attacking. The Orange-and-Blacks immediately took the ball under control and created the first scoring chance on 9 minutes. Fred found himself within shooting range, but the goalkeeper of Jablonec managed to pull the ball from the far corner. For nearly the whole half, the game was taking place on just one half of the field. Paulo Fonseca’s men used the flanks, with Darijo Srna and Marcio Azevedo actively operating there and developing attacks through midfield. The Donetsk side attempted some long-range shots, with the opposing defenders preventing them from shooting it home for a long while. Virtually the only attack by the Czechs bore fruit in the form of a spot kick, which was converted by Pospisil. However, Jablonec did not enjoy the lead for long. On 37 minutes, Azevedo ran down the left wing, beat a defender and crossed it to Ferreyra. Facundo, after making it past every opponent, headed it just home – 1-1. The numbers on the scoreboard did not change before the break.

Second half

Paulo Fonseca fielded Bernard instead of Taison in the second half of the match. On 51 minutes, Facundo Ferreyra might have grabbed a brace. The Argentine was trying to lob it past the goalkeeper only to see the ball go wide. Jablonec’s response was fruitful. Mehanovic intercepted a pass by Azevedo, with Dolezal flicking it home. The Pitmen pretty quickly equalized again. Following Marlos’ attempt, Dentinho got the ball, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance – 2-2. Shortly afterwards, the Orange-and-Blacks could regain the lead, but the Czech referee did not point to the spot after Marcio Azevedo’s collision with a defender. On 70 minutes, the Shakhtar coach made nine substitutions, fielding two forwards at a time – Andrii Boriachuk and Gustavo Blanco Leschuk. In the remaining time Donetsk dominated possession, attacking a lot, yet with nobody managing to score. Dentinho had the most clear-cut chance on 88 minutes. Bernard put his teammate through on goal, with Jablonec goalkeeper managing to parry the ball away.

The final whistle signalled the stalemate, and, according to the competition regulations, the teams had to decide the winner in a penalty shoot-out. Lady luck shone on the Czechs, who had managed to convert all five shots.
