Before the match

The Miners came into the season’s opening encounter with a renewed line-up. In the summer, the top defenders Kacharaba and Kiryukhantsev moved to the Premier League clubs, with the disqualified Ihnatenko and the injured Korniyenko being not able to help the Donetsk side in Poltava. From the off, a new pair of central defenders Danylo Sahutkin and Valerii Bondaremerged on the pitch, as Oleksandr Masalov and the making a debut Yefym Konoplya played on the flanks. The coaches trusted Volodymyr Yakimets with the role of the defending midfielder.

Such a debut predetermined the further whole course of the match. Vorskla, being eager to not put a halt to an unbeaten home run, which lasted since last December, pushed forward and delivered a few threatening shots on Yevhen Hrytsenko’s goal: defenders’ dedication saved the visiting team twice, with the goalkeeper making a save once again. Shakhtar responded with long-distance shots from Pikhalyonok and Konoplya, as well as with a series of promising crosses that could be tapped in by Yalovenko and Hluschuk. Gradually, the Orange—and-Blacks completely regained control to double the lead in the 35th minute. Yurii Hluschuk took the advantage of Vorskla defender's error, stole the ball and beat the goalkeeper to make it 0-2. A minute before the break, Poltava players could concede the third, but following a shoot from Konoplya the crossbar saved the hosts.
