Before the match

In the encounter with the Kamyanske team, Fred rejoined the starting XI after being suspended, forming a pairing with Taras Stepanenko in the holding area. The appearance of number eight has been the only change in the Donetsk line-up compared to the previous round.

First half

The beginning of the meeting was unhurried. Shakhtar had control of the ball and launched mostly positional attacks. The calm course of events was disturbed by a goal by Orest Kuzyk. In the 9th minute, the Stal player managed to get behind Darijo Srna and Andriy Pyatov after a long ball into the box to find the back of the net. Donetsk could have quickly equalised: Fred struck a beautiful volley following Bernard’s high ball only to see the latter miss the target. Later, the Orange-and-Blacks were active on the opposing half of the field, causing regular threats. Facundo Ferreyra wasted his chances on two occasions. The Argentine was heading it only to see the attempts go wide on both occasions. Bernard delivered a dangerous cross from long range only to see the Stal goalkeeper rescue his team.

Perhaps the most realistic opportunity took place on 37 minutes. Facundo Ferreyra found himself in front of the Kamyanske goal only to see Herman Penkov showcase his great reflexes. The ending of the first half saw the visitors attacking, with Paulo Fonseca’s men still managing to excel just before the break. Ismaily, after entering the opposing penalty area, fed Taison and number seven just hit the corner with his precision shot – 1-1. The goal is the 30th netted by the Brazilian for Shakhtar.

Second half

The pattern of the game did not change after the break: the events developed only in one half of the pitch. The Orange-and-Blacks operated positionally, using the entire width of the attacking third. However, dangerous chances did not happen for a long while as the hosts played very tightly against the Donetsk team and did not leave any open spaces. In the 66th minute, Paulo Fonseca made the first substitution, fielding Viktor Kovalenko instead of Yaroslav Rakits’kyy. Dentinhoappeared soon, replacing Bernard. The Miners were playing in a more threatening manner, with Facundo Ferreyra spearheading attacks on three occasions. First, the Argentine striker sent the ball next to the top corner, a little later he shot from outside the penalty area slightly above the bar; in the 80th minute he scooped the ball and sent it on target, but the goalkeeper played securely again.

Towards the end of the match, Shakhtar switched to playing with two forwards: Gustavo Blanco Leschukreplaced Taison. The visitors increased pressure on Stal, and in the dying minutes they were storming the Kamyanske, succeeding just in injury time. Darijo Srna sent the ball to the opposing half, with Facundo Ferreyra heading it to extend the pass, and Gustavo Blanco Leschuk, after beating two defenders, beautifully outplayed the goalkeeper. 2-1 – a comeback win for Paulo Fonseca’s team.

The Miners will play their next match in Kharkiv on August 5. The Orange-and-Blacks will take on Mariupol in the Premier League matchday 4. The game kicks off at 19:30The tickets are already on sale.
