Today, March 24, Shakhtar's outstanding forward and former head coach Yurii Zakharov marks his 80th birthday

This player’s scoring flair and skill made up for his not eye-catching playing style. From 1958 to 1963, Zakharov made 84 apps for the Pitmen having notched 32 goals. In the early 1960s, the Donetsk side’s striker raised the USSR Cup twice.

Due to the injury, Yurii Zakharov called time on football player’s career early and switched to coaching. From 1967 to 1971, he had been coaching Shakhtar U21 team, who won the premiership two times as well as became silver medallists under his management. In the 1970s, Yurii Volodymyrovych had been at the helm of the first team.

Zakharov helped many players into the big time, such as Yurii Dudinskyi, Volodymyr Pyanykh, Anatolii Konkov, Viktor Zvyahintsev, Vyacheslav Chanov, who played yet for Metalurh Zaporizhzhya under his management, Mykhailo Sokolovskyi and others.

FC Shakhtar’s faithful extend sincere birthday wishes to Yurii Volodymyrovych! We wish health, peace, happiness, family bliss and loved ones’ support.
