Before the match

In the previous round, Shakhtar claimed the championship, which was the landmark one and the tenth in the club’s history. For this reason, in Odesa Paulo Fonseca fielded the players who have received not so much playing time this season. They included the birthday boy Alan Patrick, who has turned 26 today. The captain's armband was entrusted to Olexandr Kucher.

First half

The teams started at a low pace, and the opening twenty minutes passed without any dangerous moments. The Pitmen controlled the course of the game, attacking wide. The Odesa side tried to counterattack and once even scored, obviously being offside though. Blanco Leschuk had the first chance to open the scoring, but the Argentine missed the target from a good scoring position. Just immediately, at the opposite goal, Mykyta Shevchenko’s save helped the Donetsk team out: after Khoblenko’s shot, the goalkeeper pulled the ball from under the crossbar. And already in the return attacking move, Shakhtar scored a goal: Blanco Leschuk fed Oleksandr Zubkov, who noticed Dentinho's dashing into the penalty area and brought the Brazilian one-on-one with Bezruk, the Chornomorets keeper parried it away, but the ball bounced off straight into the Odesa defender Ablitarov and from his foot into the back of the net – 1-0 in favour of the Orange-and-Blacks. After that, warding off a couple of the opposing attacks, the Donetsk team organised another effective attack. Alan Patrick on the right edge of the penalty area beat three opponents and passed it to Dentinho, but Bezruk reacted to the shot from the goal line, turning the ball for corner. However, it was from this set piece that Shakhtar doubled the score: Alan Patrick passed it from the right, with the ball flying to Gustavo Blanco Leschuk, the latter netted one against the Odesa outfit from about seven metres to make it 2-0.

Second half

After the break, the Pitmen more actively entered the game, with Oleksandr Zubkov having two early opportunities to excel: the first attempt of the midfielder passed over the goal, with the second one being blocked by the Odesa defender. Chornomorets responded in a no less dangerous way: after a pass from the right, Khoblenko’s header hit the woodwork. In other respects, Shakhtar still calmly controlled the course of the match, dominated possession more and continued to create chances. Set pieces by the players of Paulo Fonseca were dangerous, one of which could have been finished off by Dentinho, but failed to hit the ball with his head from the centre of the penalty area. Bohdan Butko was noticeable on the right wing: another slaloming run of the Ukrainian found Blanco Leschuk who sent a header over the crossbar. In the following attack, the Argentinian himself acted as an assistant, bringing Zubkov one-on-one with Bezruk, although the Donetsk midfielder hit the goalkeeper’s head with his powerful effort, with the ball going out for a corner. And yet in the 89th minute, the Pitmen broke through the hosts’ defence. Bohdan Butko on his wing received a great pass from the back and sent it to Blanco Leschuk, who scored a brace from the goal area.
