Shakhtar U19 hosted Feyenoord U19 in the UEFA Youth League group stage round 4

The Shakhtar coach Serhii Shyschenko significantly reshaped the line-up, also changing the formation. For the first time in the competition, goalkeeper Yevhen Kucherenko, defenders Kyrylo Melichenko and Dmytro Pavlish, along with the winger Maksym Andriuschenko appeared in the starting line-up. Yefym Konoplya and Dmytro Kryskiv operated closer to the attacking third as inside forwards.

Reliable defensively

The beginning passed in cautious challenges and at slow pace. The Donetsk team looked better and could have benefitted from that early in the game: Andrii Kulakov found himself one-on-one with the keeper, with the latter knocking down Shakhtar's forward at the edge of the penalty area. However, the referee did not dare to send Beilov away, showing only a yellow card, with Konoplya shooting right into the keeper’s hands. Soon, Kulakov had to leave the pitch due to an injury, being replaced by Vladyslav Kuzmenko. The Orange-and-Blacks launched a few more dangerous attacks, still lacking finishing. Closer to the break, the advantage went to the visitors who delivered dangerous shots. The Rotterdam team lost the most realistic chance to distinguish themselves in the last minute: Malacia shot from the left, with the ball getting stuck in the goal area, but Valerii Bondar was cold-blooded and eased the situation.

Lost victory

The second half opened with a save by Kucherenko, who reacted to Vente’s attempt from a couple-of-metres range. Shakhtar gave the initiative to the opponents, but still controlled the situation at their goal and waited for the counterattacking chance. Serhii Shyschenko’s boys got that chance in the 65th minute: Kucherenko fisted the ball following a corner kick, with Dmytro Topalov racing down the left wing and sending a cross into the penalty area, and with Vladyslav Kuzmenko beating the goalkeeper to flick the ball into the back of the net – 1-0. In the remaining time, the Miners focused on their defensive play, operating confidently and reliably, while the Miners’ quick attacks were much more dangerous than those of the Rotterdam side. For example, Melichenko did not reach the ball after a pass from Yakimets, while Kuzmenko lobbed it over both Bijlow and the goal after beating a defender. In the dying minutes, Feyenoord charged forward and managed to level the score: Geertruida with his back to the goal kicked the ball to Vente, who scored from about 15 metres. The Donetsk team could still have snatched the win, but Kuzmenko's close ranger was parried away by Bijlow from the bottom corner – 1-1.

The Miners will play their next UEFA Youth League game away vs Napoli. This coming Sunday, November 5, the team of Serhii Shyschenko will play their Chornomorets counterparts in the Ukrainian championship.
