As part of the Premier League round 15, Shakhtar entertained Mariupol away

Mariupol have been looking forward to arrival of the current champions and met this season leaders with a capacity crowd. Today the Miners could not count on the help from Taison and Yaroslav Rakits’kyy, with David Khocholava and Viktor Kovalenko taking their positions on the pitch. Taras Stepanenko also remained on the sideline, as Alan Patrick took his role at centre-back. The hosts emerged on the field without the head coach: Oleksandr Babich, who disqualified in the previous round, watched the action from the stands.

Two goals from one spot

Both teams got set to display open football and exchanged dangerous shots already in the opening minutes: Fomin flicked his header goalwards from the edge of the goal area, but Andriy Pyatov showed excellent reflexes to save the Donetsk side, as Shakhtar responded with a clear-cut effort from Ferreyra, which was denied by the goalkeeper. Midway through the first half, the Orange-and-Blacks enjoyed the total advantage, and the closing stages were fully under their control. As the clock ticked past the 30-minute mark, the ball cannoned back to Facundo Ferreyra within the penalty area of the Mariupol outfit, and the Argentine took a touch to turn it into the roof of the net - 0-1. Hereafter, Marlos and Fred had their opportunities, and when the Azovites played shorthanded (on 45 minutes, Gomis picked up the second yellow card and was given the marching orders) the Orange-and-Blacks doubled the lead: Nasonov played a poor pass inside his own penalty area, of which Marlos took advantage by beating Halchuk with a shot from the tight angle to make it 0-2.

Attacking style

Immediately after the break, Mariupol managed to get back into the game: Fomin burst into the penalty area and pulled one back. However, a few minutes later, the Miners extended their advantage to two goals again: Ferreyra gathered defenders around himself near the opponent's goal and laid off the ball to Bernard, with the Brazilian slotting the ball into the top corner – 1-3. Immediately after that, Marlos could make the score thrashing, but Mishnyov blocked his shot from 12 meters with the body, while Tyshchenko missed his chance near Pyatov’s goal by blazing it next to the near post. Fomin, who went one on one with Andriy, could register a brace, however, the Shakhtar ‘keeper emerged victorious in the captains’ duel. The rivals demonstrated excellent physical fitness, playing at high pace until the final whistle. Thus, Dentinho hit on the rebound, but the Mariupol shot-stopper showed reflexes, then the defender put the block on an effort by Khocholava following a corner. Inside the dying minutes, Mariupol tried to produce a late barrage and were close to success, but Fomin's kick hit the bar. As a result, Shakhtar run out 3-1 victors. Paulo Fonseca’s men earn 36 points and keep a comfortable lead over their competitors.

There comes a two-week break in the league, after which the Miners will have their next encounter versus Oleksandriia in Kharkiv on November 17.
