In the second round of the UEFA Youth League, the Miners played Manchester City away
The Shakhtar U19 head coach Serhii Shyshhenko made just one change in the starting line-up compared to the first round match: Andrii Kulakov replaced Vladyslav Kuzmenko, who scored in three games in a row.
Goal from a set-piece
The opening stages of the game saw an even and cautious game, and the first real chance came only in the middle of the first half: Valerii Bondar sent his header after gathering a pass from Yukhym Konoplia, however, Grimshaw saved the Citizens. For a long time, the defence of the Orange-blacks coped with dangerous British forwards and did not allow them to threaten Vertiei’s goal, with the goalkeeper himself being forced to save the team a couple of times following long-range strikes. However, two minutes before the break, a set piece brought success to the hosts. Foden played a corner before Latibeaudiere headed it home.
Unrealized opportunities
At the very beginning of the second half, Manchester City’s footballers doubled their lead. Following the attacking move down the left flank, the ball found Foden, which beat Vertiei. However, in less than five minutes, Shakhtar cut the gap. The team’s skipper Volodymyr Yakymets successfully got onto rebound after a corner and from nearly the edge of the penalty area hammered his volley into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. Such a debut noticeably made the game spring to life, and the rivals began to exchange sharp moments. The Miners were close to equalizing: first, City’s goalie kept out a long-ranger from Konoplia, and then Andrii Kulakov flicked from a few meters after a left cross, but straight at the same Grimshaw. Vladyslav Vertiei had a lot of work to do, with him denying the efforts from Matondo and Dele-Bashiru, in turn. Maksym Andruschenko could score just after coming off the bench, however, having received the ball on the right edge of the six-yard box, hesitated and missed the opportunity. Before the final whistle, the Donetsk side continued to push forward, as the British demonstrated a calm and reliable defensive performance, and yet in the added time compensated by the referee, Richards fired home from the penalty area to seal the final score of 3-1 in favour of Manchester City.
Now the Donetsk team will have a break, due to the matches of national teams. Serhii Shyshchenko’s lads will hold the domestic league fixture against Karpaty on October 14, before locking horns with Feyenoord on October 17.
