UEFA TV crew visited Shakhtar ahead of the UCL Round of 16 meeting with Roma (ITA)
The reporters attended the Orange-and-Blacks’ training session and filmed interviews with Bernard and Taras Stepanenko after that. The main focus for discussion was the upcoming knockout phase fixtures in the most prestigious club cup competition.
- We are facing two really tough games against the Romans, - says Bernard, Shakhtar midfielder. – We should approach the clash being cool-headed. We need to be watchful and focussed from the first to the last minute. Despite the opponents, Shakhtar always take to the pitch thinking about victory. The Italians have top-level players, they deliver great performance in Serie A. Though I’m sure we can showcase all of our best qualities and decently counteract this team.
In his interview to the British reporters, Taras Stepanenko recalled the Champions League Round of 16 games vs Roma back in 2011 and told them how, in his opinion, the opponents have changed over the past seven years:
- We claimed a 3-2 away win. Back then, literally on the eve of the meeting with us, the new coach took charge of the Romans, with the atmosphere in the team being not very favourable, so we were justly considered the favourites in this pairing, which, in fact, we proved on the football pitch performance and scoreline wise. Presently, they represent a well-established club with expert performers guided by a young ambitious mentor. Definitely, today's Roma are stronger than the team Shakhtar encountered in 2011.
UEFA will publish the full interviews in their official media shortly.
