Paulo Fonseca’s team rounded off the training camp with a friendly vs Besiktas

The Miners have spent three weeks in Grassau, Germany and in Velden, Austria. The players were rediscovering form, alternating training with test games and thus undergoing a serious physical workload. But even so, the Orange-and-Blacks performed confidently in every game.

Serious resistance

Paulo Fonseca’s men started the encounter with the Turkish giants actively, and as early as in the third minute, they might have opened the scoring: Yaroslav Rakits’kyy found Ismaily on the left with a great delivery, with the Brazilian crossing it into the penalty area, but Viktor Kovalenko’s volley went just inches off the post. Besiktas decided to protect themselves from such threats through ball control, and closer to the middle of the first half, some chances occurred near Andriy Pyatov’s goal. Initially, Shakhtar's goalkeeper showed his great reflexes by parrying away an attempt by Adriano, with Vagner Love and Tolgay Arslan then missing the target from advantageous positions.

End-to-end action, but goalless one

The second half turned out to be much more interesting in terms of the teams’ pace, with not that many really dangerous situations again. The efforts by Kovalenko (header) and Fernando (from the edge of the box) were denied by the Turkish defenders, and with Pyatov saving Gonul's attempt; in response Maycon originally struck a free kick, letting the ball under the wall, but Zengin was ready for that. At the end of the match, Bolbat appeared on the pitch, with the initiative being fully taken over by the Miners, and the Totovytskyi’s shot even hitting the back of the net just after the referee had ruled him offside.

0-0 is the logical outcome of the meeting. This was Shakhtar’s final game on the summer training camp. In total, the Orange-and-Blacks had five friendlies, claiming three wins and being tied twice (aggregate goal difference of 10-3).

Paulo Fonseca’s team are returning to Ukraine. In Odesa on July 21, they will open the new football season with the Ukrainian Super Cup tie vs Dynamo.
