The new football season kicked off with the Ukrainian Super Cup clash between Shakhtar and Dynamo

This is the 15th edition in the history of the trophy - each time the super cup went to one of the giants: eight Super Cups are in Shakhtar’s collection, with another six belonging to Dynamo Kyiv. Before the game, the UPL board awarded the laureates of the previous season: Andriy Pyatov received the best Goalkeeper award, with Marlos winning the League’s Best Player title. We want to mark the appearance of Oleh Danchenko at right back, and that of the Brazilian Fernando, with this game being the debut one with Shakhtar for both.

The price of one error

From the off, Shakhtar showed their desire to play on top and created a few chances. Marlos struck on target - right into the hands of Boyko. After that, Viktor Kovalenko tried himself with the same outcome. Meanwhile, Ismaily completed his solo run with a powerful left-footer only to see his attempt hit the crossbar. For the second time, the woodwork helped the opponents after the excellent interaction between Marlos and Danchenko: Oleh made a delivery from the right, with the ball bouncing off the defender and nearly hitting the back of the net. Meanwhile, Dynamo obviously could not cope with the Miners’ pace and pressure. In one episode, Burda deliberately hit Fernando with his straight leg, but instead of being sent off for the grossest foul, he was shown just a yellow card. In this kind of situation, the goal netted in the 18th minute was fully illogical: the Kyivites took advantage of Pyatov's mistake, with Buyalskyi opening the scoring. From that moment on, the game was fully controlled by the Orange-and-Black team, but the opponents dropped deep and, having built three defensive lines, they blocked the ball’s way into the penalty area. But even against so tight defence, Paulo Fonseca’s men found opportunities for making it even more dangerous: the active Kovalenko struck twice dangerously, with the attempts going just wide on both occasions; after Ismaily’s cross, the opponents prevented Kryvtsov from shooting.

The whole half near the opposing goal

Early in the second half, the Kyiv team did not last long to keep the play in midfield and even to deliver a dangerous counterattack (Shepelev struck from about 12 meters too high), but gradually the edge again shifted to the Miners. Alan Patrick tried Boyko with his long-ranger, with the goalkeeper of Dynamo turning it for a corner with difficulty. Next, Fernando almost ran off to the goal, but he was beaten by the same Boyko for a split second. Toward the middle of the second half, Shakhtar fully loaded the box of the White-Blues with corners and crosses, and with every minute this pressure only increased. Kostiantyn Truhaniv did not react to Marlos’ falling in the penalty area after the collision with Harmash, while Stepanenko nearly pushed the ball into the near corner, with Fernando bursting from the left-hand side and sending it close to the post - the goalkeeper parried it away. To maintain the attacking intensity, Paulo Fonseca fielded the fresh players - the Shakhtar Academy graduates Andrii Totovytskyi and Serhii Bolbat. Dynamo, patiently waiting for the opportunity to launch a counterattack, received that kind of chance: Tsyhankov's header struck the crossbar after Verbic’s delivery. The Orange-Blacks immediately responded with their super chance: Ismaily delivered it, Moraes headed the ball into the far corner, but Boyko parried away the shot through jumping. In the dying minutes, Totovytskyi technically beat his opponent down the left wing and crossed to Moraes, but the Brazilian tried to hit the ball with his heel and failed to do that properly. The final attack was marked by a traditional outburst of emotions, which resulted in sending off Ismaily and Burda, with the score remaining unchanged - 0-1.
