In the second round, Shakhtar received the capital-based Arsenal-Kyiv
The Miners held at the OSC Metalist their first home game this season. In this encounter, they could not count on the injured Sergii Kryvtsov, Ivan Ordets, and Yaroslav Rakits’kyy, along with Ismaily who was suspended. In their absence, the pairing of centrebacks were represented by David Khocholava and Mykola Matviienko, with Bohdan Butko appearing at left back, and Taison returning to the starting XI.
The captain assists and scores
The obvious plan of the visitors to play defensively was disrupted already in the 10th minute by the Miners’ early goal: a cross by Danchenko into the penalty area, lack of interplay between the Gunners’ defender and goalkeeper, Taison strikes, Moraes tips the ball into the back of the net – 1-0. Alan Patrick had a great chance to double the score, but the Brazilian’s powerful free-kick just shattered the crossbar. Shakhtar tried not only to act effectively but also to conduct every attack beautifully: one-twos by the Brazilians, Marlos’ dribbling past two or three opponents, splitting passes into the penalty area. It was this kind of pass that helped them unlock Arsenal’s defence for the second time. Maycon delivered the ball to Taison in midfield, the captain ripped open the opposing defence with one movement and brought through Fernando, with the latter scoring his first goal for the Donetsk team after a great shot to the left-hand corner – 2-0. The score quickly became big: the Miners played a free-kick down the left flank, with Taison moving to the middle and bending it from the edge of the box just into the roof of the net – 3-0. Only closer to the break, the visitors managed to somehow remind the spectators of themselves, but the first shot at goal by Dombrovskyi went just wide.
Cipriano's debut and confident win
The second half of the match was calmer and slower. Paulo Fonseca’s men continued dominating possession, setting the pace and creating scoring chances. So, the teammates brought Fernando through on goal through their passing cobweb, but he failed to hit the far corner. Right after that, Moraes tried to backheel a Danchenko cross – it wasn’t strong enough and got into the hands of the goalkeeper. Midway through the second half, the game’s major performer Taison was replaced by Totovytskyi, with Cipriano coming on for Fernando to make his debut in Shakhtar shirt. The fresh players immediately orchestrated a dangerous attack: Andriy fed Marquinhos, with the latter’s attempt being denied by a defender.
3-0 - Shakhtar convincingly defeated Arsenal-Kyiv, Taison was involved in scoring every goal, and the clean sheet secured by Shakhtar defenders again.
In the next round on August 3, the Miners will play vs Dynamo in Kyiv.
