On May 18, FC Shakhtar and DTEK energy company signed a memorandum on the development and promotion of amateur football in Ukraine

The formal signing of the memorandum took place at the Shakhtar Academy base in Schaslyve near Kyiv. The event was attended by the Donetsk club CEO Sergei Palkin, the DTEK CEO Maksym Timchenko, along with the Shakhtar players Maksym Malyshev and Bohdan Butko. Before concluding the co-operation agreement, Sergei Palkin and Maksym Timchenko addressed the audience with an introductory statement.

Sergei Palkin, FC Shakhtar CEO:

- Today we have two significant events. Firstly, we sign a memorandum of co-operation with DTEK. Secondly, just a couple of hours ago, the Shakhtar U21 team won the Ukrainian League title by drawing with their Dynamo Kyiv counterparts. Dear friends, you all know perfectly well that in a few days Kyiv will host the Champions League final. But, unfortunately, the final doesn’t feature a single Ukrainian team. The thing is that the level of professional football in our country is very and very low, especially in comparison with Europe. The reason lies in the fact that we have a poorly developed children's grassroots football. If we want to conquer great peaks in the European stage from the national team’s perspective, and from the clubs’ perspective, we should make every effort to involve as many children as possible into grassroots football. The development of football in Ukraine forms the basis for everything else. Only then we can be called a football country. I am doubly pleased because we are signing a memorandum of co-operation with DTEK. You might ask, why this particular company? Because DTEK shares our philosophy and principles of the grassroots football development. And most importantly, DTEK like football, they like the sport. Together we will develop the Come on, Let’s Play! project in the framework of the recently formed Shakhtar Social project. We are sure that with the support of DTEK, the Come on, Let’s Play! will appear in many cities and towns of Ukraine, thus we will give a serious start to the development of grassroots football in Ukraine.

Maksym Timchenko, DTEK CEO:

- First of all, I want to congratulate Shakhtar on the golden double, on their brilliant Champions League campaign. The Donetsk club has once again proved that they are the undoubted leaders of Ukrainian football. DTEK is the leader of the Ukrainian power generation industry. I’m really pleased that today the two leaders unite their efforts in order to invest in future generations, to develop our children. For us this project is doubly important because we plan to build soccer fields in the places of the presence of our enterprises, to organize teams, to provide them with everything necessary. I think this will contribute to the future of the whole of Ukraine. We want to set an example for other companies. I'm sure that there days, only private business can make a breakthrough in the development of football by supporting such initiatives.

Then, Sergei Palkin and Maksym Timchenko signed a memorandum of co-operation and exchanged symbolic balls. The guests also opened the final part of the Come on, Let’s Play! competition to be held on May 19-20 on the club Academy pitches. Maksym Malyshev and Bohdan Butko played an impromptu football match vs the participants in the Come on, Let’s Play! final tournament. The event ended with a general photo as a memento.

We want to note that the first joint venture between FC Shakhtar and DTEK will be the expansion of the geography of the Come on, Let’s Play! project for the development of children's football. In 2018, it will start operating in 10 new places, settlements and villages: the village of Dobrotvor, the town of Chervonohrad (Lviv Oblast), the towns of Dobropillya, Belozerske, Kurakhove (Donetsk Oblast), Schastya, the village of Petropavlivka (Luhansk Oblast), the town of Burshtyn, the villages of Demeshkovtsy and Demyaniv (Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast). In those places, FC Shakhtar and DTEK will build new modern football grounds. For the young players, they will organize classes and regular competitions; for their coaches, they will organise vocational training, internships and master classes with European experts. The footballers will be provided with the necessary equipment and ammunition. In 2018, DTEK will invest UAH 7.6 million in the project.
