Ukraine U21 beat Scotland U21 and got one more step closer to UEFA U21 Euro 2019
Two matchdays away from the qualifying round end, Ukraine, Scotland and the Netherlands were challenging the second spot in their group.
Through character
The Blue-and-Yellows received the Brits at home. With the captain's armband on, Shakhtar midfielder Viktor Kovalenko led the team onto the pitch, with three more graduates of the Shakhtar Academy appearing in the starting line-up: Oleksandr Zubkov, Oleksandr Pikhalyonok and Ihor Kiryukhantsev. The beginning of the match was unexpected for the hosts: the Scots netted one in the very first attack (Morgan got his name on the scoresheet in the 48th second) and continued to press on Lunin’s goal. But Oleksandr Holovko's lads coped with that, pushed the game away from their own penalty area, equalizing midway through the second half: in the 32nd minute, Oleksandr Zubkov finished off a delivery from the left by sending it right into the corner.
Zubkov's winning brace and Kovalenko's injury-time goal
Early in the second half, Zubkov was close to scoring through a bicycle kick, and in the 56th minute, the hosts went in front thanks to his powerful shot from about a 25-metre range. The Ukrainians successfully restrained the opponents, netting the third goal in injury time. Viktor Kovalenko found himself one on one with the keeper and successfully beat the latter.
Ukraine U21 3-1 Scotland U21
Goals: 0-1 Morgan (1’), 1-1 Zubkov (32’), 2-1 Zubkov (56’), 3-1 Kovalenko (90+4’)
Ukraine U21: Lunin, Mykhailichenko, Mykolenko, Popov, Kiryukhantsev, Shepelev, Pykhalyonok, Lunyov (Tretyakov, 38), Shved (Boriachuk, 71), Kovalenko (c), Zubkov (Shaparenko, 83)
In the decisive match of the last round, the Netherlands U21 will take on Ukraine U21 in Doetinchem on October 16. The Blue-and-Yellows need the win only to preserve the chance of making it to the UEFA U21 Euro 2019 from the second spot.
