Shakhtar U19 hosted Atalanta U19 in the UEFA Youth League round 6

The final match was of no competitive significance for the Miners: in previous games they scored only 2 points and lost every chance of advancing from the group. The Bergamaschi, having 10 points, have secured a place in the knockout stage, and today, in case of a positive result, they could claim the top spot in the group and the Last-16 berth immediately. Compared to the previous match, there has been only one change in the starting lineup of Shakhtar U19 - the first-team forward Danylo Sikan, who had already made his debut in the adult Champions League, has returned to the centre-forward position.

Finishing issues

The start of the match was quite calm: the teams tested each other and were in no hurry to make any all-out attacks, exchanging only the attempts by Bondarenko (goalkeeper) and Brogni (wide). That all changed in the 20th minute when Piccoli took advantage of the defenders' mistake and opened the scoring. Shakhtar players began to play more actively, with some dangerous chances beginning to appear near the Italians’ goal. Kryskiv sent the ball to Sikan, the latter immediately made a diagonal attempt only to see the keeper stop it. Mudryk burst into the penalty area from the left-hand side and rolled it to the same Sikan - Gelmi parried it away again. Drambaev ran away from his marksman down the wing and crossed it into the penalty area twice: the defender interrupted the first attempt, with the second attempt taking deflection off Sikan’s head and whizzing over the crossbar. In response, Piccoli produced a dangerous effort in a counterattack only to see Trubin come to his team’s rescue.

They deserved more

The second half also began with the Miners’ attacks, however, it was the visitors who netted another goal: Ghislandi made an assist, Piccoli grabbed a brace through a precision shot. Fernando Valente's young men disagreed with the course of the match and rushed to reduce the deficit, managing to make it pretty soon. Mudryk received the ball in the penalty area, tried to make it past his opponent and was brought down by the latter, with Artem Bondarenko elegantly converting the spot-kick in the style of Panenka - 1-2. The opponents spent the last half-hour almost completely in Atalanta’s half of the field, with the hosts having enough opportunities to equalize. After a set-piece, Kozik could have scored one, but a defender of Bergamo-based team cleared the ball off the goal line. Viunnyk actively entered the game: initially, Mudryk and Sikan did not finish off his powerful pass, with Bohdan himself making a corner attempt only to see the goalkeeper parry away his effort. Even Trubin went out of goal to take part in the final assault, but the Italians withstood it.

1-2 - Shakhtar U19 lost to Atalanta U19 and finished their UEFA Youth League campaign. It was also the final match this year for Shakhtar U19. The season will resume for them in March 2020.
