On July 20, Shakhtar played a test game against Olimpik Donetsk

Luis Castro’s outfit completed their summer friendlies series and their preparation for the season with this game. Yesterday, the Miners claimed a 2-0 friendly win at another UPL side Kolos (2-0). In the friendly vs Olimpik, the Shakhtar manager fielded the squad which is maximally close to the regular senior team, trying out the 4-3-3 formation again, with Taras Stepanenko having the role of the only holding midfielder.

Narrow advantage

The teams started the game with end-to-end action, Pyatov coped with Matar’s attempt and the Orange-and-Blacks might well earn an early spot-kick, although the referee ignored the fact that Moraes had been brought down in the opponents’ box. However, in the 26th minute, it was Junior who started the goal-scoring move - he launched a fast attack and fed Taison down the left wing, the goalkeeper coped with the skipper’s attempt, while Alan Patrick was the first on the ball to make it 1-0. Before the break, the game was fully controlled by Luis Castro’s men, but it saw not so many dangerous situations. Shakhtar footballers tried to operate more through the wings, where Ismaily and Bolbat actively supported the attacks, while the Olympians relied on deliveries into the penalty area, which were easily denied by Shakhtar’s central defenders and goalkeeper.

Winning end of pre-season

Early in the second half, the Shakhtar players raised their pace and charged forward more actively, which quickly resulted in the second goal - in the 57th minute, Ismaily crossed it from the left flank into the centre of the penalty area, and Alan Patrick volleyed it home to secure a brace – 2-0. Midway through the half, Luis Castro made a number of substitutions, fielding Dodo, Oleksandr Pikhalyonok, Fernando, and Mykola Matviienko onto the pitch. The fresh players have noticeably improved the movement and created some attacking threat. Pikhalyonok took a great free-kick (with the opposition goalie coming to his side’s rescue), and then, together with Fernando, organizing with Fernando a one-on-one chance for Moraes just to see the latter send it wide. Just a few minutes later, Junior converted his chance by completing a spectacular counterattack of his team. The Miners won 3-0.

On July 28, Shakhtar will open the new season with a Ukrainian Super Cup game vs Dynamo. The meeting will take place in Odesa. It kicks off at 21:00.
