Zaporizhia hosted the 2018/19 Ukrainian Cup final

Shakhtar became the Ukrainian Cup finalists for the 19th time, also being the record holders in terms of the number of victories in the competition, as well as the current trophy winners. On their way to the decisive fight, the Miners made it past Olimpik, Dynamo, and Dnipro-1. Inhulets have become the UC finalists for the first time, having defeated Mariupol, Karpaty, and Zorya before that. Andriy Pyatov was not in the starting lineup of the Miners (with his place being taken by Oleksii Shevchenko), Taras Stepanenko was also absent (with Alan Patrick and Marcos Antonio forming the defensive midfield pairing).

Tete’s benefit night

The match began with an exchange of attacks: Sitnikov parried away Moraes’ shot, with Klymenko’s attempt being blocked by Kryvtsov. Early in the game, the Miners could claim two clear-cut spot-kicks after the obvious fouls by the Inhulets players on Moraes and Ismaily, but the referee reasoned those episodes in favour of the Petrove side. However, the team of Paulo Fonseca and had enough goals from open play. The start of the defeat was laid by Tete, who put his leg in Taison's path and adjusted the ball right into the goal - 1-0. It was the first goal by the young Brazilian for the Orange-and-Blacks, being followed by a brace just shortly afterwards: Taison delivered a splitting pass into the penalty area, Ismaily crossed it into the goal area, and Tete finished it off from about a two-metre range, making it 2-0. There were also dangerous attempts by Taison and Patrick, which were denied by the opposition keeper, with Junior Moraes summing up the first half by skillfully taking advantage of Taison’s subtle pass and making it 3-0.

Sure advantage

After the break, the game somewhat calmed down, with the sub players leaving the bench giving it another impetus. In the 61st minute, Paulo Fonseca made a double substitution (he fielded Kayode and Solomon), and it worked just instantly: Tete launched a counterattack and passed it to Manor Solomon on the left-hand side, with the latter beating the defender from the edge of the box by drilling the ball into the far corner. 4-0 - another club newcomer has scored his debut goal. A little later, Wellington Nem appeared on the pitch, with the goalkeeper barely turning his attempt into the post. The opponents tried to respond to the Miners’ goals with something, but the only memorable attempt is Kovalenko's great free-kick attempt, which was spectacularly parried away by Oleksii Shevchenko.

4-0 - Shakhtar defeated inhulets in the finals and became the 13-time Ukrainian Cup winners! The Orange-and-Blacks have won this trophy for the fourth season in a row.

On May 19, at the same stadium, in the league game vs Zorya, the team of Paulo Fonseca may well secure their third consecutive golden double as well.
