On 20 May 2009, Shakhtar won the first European trophy in their history
The Miners started their journey in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup campaign at the Round of 32 stage, defeating London-based Tottenham (2-0, 1-1). Then, they beat CSKA Moskva (0-1, 2-0), Olympique Marseille (2-0, 2-1), and Dynamo Kyiv (1-1, 2-1).
Today exactly 10 years ago, the final between Shakhtar and Werder took place in Istanbul. In the 25th minute, Luiz Adriano opened the scoring assisted by Razvan Rat, but before the break the Bremen side made it level after a powerful free-kick by Naldo. Normal time ended in a draw, with the outcome happening in extra time: in the 97th minute, Darijo Srna fired a cross, with Jadson volleying it right home past the goalkeeper. 2-1 - Shakhtar won the UEFA Cup!
