In the course of the current Championship, Lviv have changed the coaches twice. The team opened the season with Gilmar at the helm, with the Brazilian resigning by the fifth round though, being replaced with Yuriy Bakalov. It was with him that the team played the most games this season. Bakalov left Lviv in early April after suffering defeats vs Mariupol in the UPL and vs Zorya in the Cup. A 55-year-old Bohdan Blavatskyi was signed up by the club until the season end.

Previously, Blavatskyi worked with Prykarpattia, Obolon, Vynnytsia-based Nyva, Enerhetyk and other clubs, a few years ago he was an assistant to Vitaliy Kvartsyanyi at Volyn, recently working in Poland (Stal, Wisla). The newly appointed coach stressed the goal of getting into European competitions, and also explained his philosophy to the players with a well-known phrase that came from Brazil many years ago: “You will score as many goals as you can and we will score as many as we want.”

Squad

It is not surprising that Blavatskyi began his acquaintance with the players with that phrase because Lviv’s current player list includes 12 Brazilians. They could be more numerous, but, for example, the club terminated the deal with Julio Cesar by mutual agreement in the winter, plus Lukas Taylor - who scored the winner vs Dynamo in the autumn - returned to Palmeiras after the end of his loan spell.

Who forms the backbone of Lviv? In a literal sense, the defender Volodymyr Adamyuk is irreplaceable after playing in all 26 rounds. The forward Bruno Duarte made 23 appearances, the goalkeeper Oleksandr Bandura made 21 apps. By the way, the Brazilian is among the top five scorers in the Premier League with 9 goals - only Moraes, Tsyhankov and Shved netted more goals, with Boriachuk having scored the same number of goals. In recent games, the team have used a 4-1-4-1 formation. The goalkeeper and three defenders are Ukrainians, the appearance of the fifth Ukrainian in midfield is also possible (Serhii Borzenko), with the Brazilians leading in the offensive third.

The rivalry plot

Kharkiv will see the opponents with the squads which have got stronger lately in a similar way. Lviv are a fairly strong team who are able to give surprises, which already happened in the first UPL stage vs Dynamo (1-0 win). In the last round, the Kyivans took revenge, although Blavatskyi's men had a 61% possession, they attacked all the time (with the major threat coming from the left wing) and produced 16 shots. The Blue-Gold team aim at the European competitions, but the title-seeking Shakhtar can well extend their losing run by adding the fifth defeat in a row.
